Exercise

Moderate, but don’t be fooled by the size. A couple of walks plus some play keeps them happy, but they also want something to think about. Keep the routine consistent and they’re easy.

Grooming

The curly coat doesn't shed but it does mat — brush regularly, several times a week at minimum, and schedule professional grooming every six to eight weeks. This is a non-negotiable commitment.

Training

One of the most trainable dogs that exists — Toy Poodles are fast learners with genuine enthusiasm for the process. They pick up commands quickly, respond excellently to positive reinforcement, and enjoy the mental engagement of training. Start early and keep challenging them.

The Poodle (Toy) Story

The Toy Poodle is the smallest of the Poodle lineup, but no one told it that. The intelligence, adaptability, and sharpness of the breed come through at full strength, just in a much smaller body. This is a very smart dog wrapped in a low-shedding, curly coat that saves you from constant cleaning but replaces it with a standing grooming appointment.

They’re social, switched-on, and properly engaged with their people. Nothing gets past them. They notice everything, process it quickly, and tend to have an opinion about it. That alertness is part of the appeal, and part of the problem if you don’t manage it.

Barking is where that shows up. They’re natural commentators. Door knocks, footsteps, a leaf moving with intent, it all gets announced. Training can rein it in, but it needs to happen early or you’ll be living with a running commentary.

The coat is the trade-off. It doesn’t shed much, but it doesn’t look after itself either. The hair keeps growing and mats if ignored, so regular brushing and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks isn’t optional. Skip it and you’ll regret it.

Training is where they shine. Toy Poodles are fast, engaged, and genuinely enjoy learning. They pick things up quickly, remember them, and respond well to positive, consistent work. It’s one of the more rewarding small dogs to train.

For anyone in an apartment or smaller home who wants a clever, low-shedding dog with a lot of personality packed into a small frame, the Toy Poodle is hard to beat. Just be ready for the brains that come with it.
