Exercise

An active dog that needs proper daily exercise — around an hour of walking and play keeps a Cockapoo settled and out of mischief. They enjoy fetch, off-lead runs when safe, and anything that gives them a chance to burn energy with their people.

Grooming

The low-shedding coat is one of the Cockapoo's selling points, but it doesn't look after itself. Brush regularly to prevent matting and schedule professional grooming every six to eight weeks. The texture varies by litter — curlier coats need more frequent attention.

Training

Smart, eager, and responsive to positive training — the Cockapoo is a genuine pleasure to teach. They pick up commands quickly and enjoy the engagement of training sessions. Consistency and reward-based methods get excellent results.

The Cockapoo Story

The Cockapoo has been around since the 1960s and has spent the decades since proving that some crossbreeds just work. A Cocker Spaniel crossed with a Miniature Poodle, it combines two dogs with genuinely complementary traits: the Spaniel's warmth and affection, and the Poodle's intelligence and lower-shedding coat. The result is a dog that's hard to dislike and reasonably easy to live with.

They're excellent with children — genuinely so, not just tolerably so. Patient, playful, and sturdy enough to handle the chaos of family life without getting rattled. They're also good with other pets, adaptable to different living situations, and tend to take to strangers with an openness that makes them more companion than watchdog.

The intelligence is real and it cuts both ways. Cockapoos learn quickly, which makes training efficient and enjoyable. It also means they need mental engagement to stay out of trouble. A bored Cockapoo will find something to do, and it won't always be something you'll appreciate, like garden bed remodelling.

The coat requires work. Depending on which parent they inherit more from, it can range from loose waves to tighter curls, but either way, regular brushing and professional grooming every six to eight weeks is part of the deal. The trade-off is low shedding, which matters to plenty of households.

Energy levels are solidly active. A Cockapoo without adequate daily exercise gets restless, and restless is where the mischief starts. Two good walks a day plus some time in the dog park takes care of most of it. They're not working dogs — they don't need a job — but they do need to move, a lot.

For families, first-time dog owners, or anyone looking for a sociable, adaptable companion with manageable grooming demands and genuine affection to give, the Cockapoo is a strong candidate. A lovely dog by any measure, the popularity of the Cockapoo is well earned.
