The Shih-Poo is a Shih Tzu crossed with a Toy Poodle, built to be a small, low-shedding companion that fits easily into modern life. You get the Poodle’s intelligence and coat, the Shih Tzu’s warmth and attachment to people, and a dog that generally knows exactly where you are in the house at all times. They’re classic “Velcro” dogs — affectionate, social, and not shy about following you from room to room.
At 3 to 9 kg, they’re well suited to apartments and smaller homes. Exercise needs are modest — a couple of short walks and some indoor play is enough. They’re not demanding physically, but they do like being involved in whatever you’re doing.
They’re typically good with children and other pets, easy-going in day-to-day life, and broadly adaptable. They tolerate being left alone better than some companion breeds, but they still prefer company over solitude.
The coat is where reality kicks in. It can range from silky to tightly curly, often somewhere in between, with colours all over the place — black, white, brown, brindle. Low shedding, yes. Low maintenance, no. Daily brushing is the difference between a tidy dog and a matted one, with professional grooming every four to eight weeks keeping things under control.
Training reflects the mix. They’re smart enough to learn quickly and independent enough to question the point of it. Short, reward-based sessions work best. Push too hard and you’ll get resistance, not progress.
They can also be a bit chatty. Alert barking comes naturally, which is useful until it isn’t, so some early training helps keep it reasonable.
One thing to watch is food. Small dog, big appetite. They love treats and will happily overdo it if you let them, so diet needs a bit of discipline.
For owners who want a small, affectionate, low-shedding dog and are realistic about grooming and a bit of attitude, the Shih-Poo is an easy, likeable fit
