The Chinese Crested Story

The dog equivalent of a punk rock star who forgot their shirt, the Chinese Crested is one of the more memorable sights in the canine world. The hairless variety sports a dramatic crest, feathery “socks” and a plume of a tail, giving the impression of a dog permanently styled for a backstage appearance.

Despite the name, the breed’s story likely spans several continents. Small hairless dogs travelled on trading ships, earning their keep as efficient ratters before gradually shifting into life as companions. What remains is a dog valued as much for its unusual look as for its affectionate, people-focused nature.

Under the quirky exterior is a graceful, surprisingly athletic little dog. Cresteds move with a light, almost cat-like agility and have no trouble launching themselves onto furniture with precision. They’re lively and playful, but their energy sits firmly in the moderate range. A short walk and some indoor activity usually does the job.

Temperament is where the breed really settles in. Chinese Cresteds are affectionate, loyal and often strongly bonded to their people. That closeness can tip into clinginess if you’re not careful. Around strangers they tend to be reserved, quietly sizing people up before deciding whether they’re worth the effort.

The hairless variety comes with its own maintenance manual. That exposed skin needs protection from both sun and cold, along with regular care to keep it healthy. They’re not high-grooming in the traditional sense, but they’re not low-maintenance either. Skip the upkeep and it shows quickly.

They’re also a little more sensitive than they look. Rough handling, chaotic households or long hours alone don’t suit them particularly well, and they do best in homes where someone is around and paying attention.

For the right owner, the Chinese Crested is a delightful companion. Loyal, quirky and full of character, they offer affectionate company along with the undeniable bonus of being one of the most interesting-looking dogs you’re ever likely to meet.
