Exercise

A couple of solid sprints in a fenced area each day and they're done — Borzoi are surprisingly committed couch ornaments between runs.

Grooming

That long, silky coat looks like it should require hours of grooming, but a Borzoi’s fur is surprisingly low drama. The hair doesn’t mat as badly as many long-coated breeds, which is why owners often say it’s easier than it looks.

Training

A Borzoi will consider a command briefly, the way one might consider a restaurant recommendation from a stranger, and then do whatever it was already planning to do.

The Borzoi Story

The Borzoi looks like it stepped straight out of an eighteenth-century painting of royalty, which, historically speaking, isn’t far from the truth. All long legs, narrow head and flowing coat, they move through a room the way a silk scarf drifts across polished timber. Nothing about them feels rushed. Even standing still, they appear to be quietly posing for a portrait.

Originally bred by Russian nobility to hunt wolves across the open steppe, the breed still carries itself with that same calm, aristocratic confidence. There’s a quiet dignity to them, as if they’re faintly aware their ancestors ran beside princes while the rest of the canine world was chasing rats.

Despite the aristocratic appearance, life indoors is surprisingly low key. Borzois are quiet, gentle dogs who spend much of the day stretched across the softest surface they can locate. They’re affectionate with their families, though not in the clingy, attention-seeking way of some breeds. Their loyalty runs deeper and quieter, expressed through calm companionship rather than constant demands.

Training requires patience rather than force. Like many sighthounds, they possess a strong independent streak and tend to consider instructions carefully before deciding whether compliance is truly necessary. Harsh methods get you nowhere, but calm consistency works well enough.

They do need room to run. A secure area where they can stretch those remarkable legs is important, because once a Borzoi decides to accelerate it does so with startling speed. The rest of the time they’re remarkably relaxed, even capable of adapting to apartment life if their daily sprint is accounted for.

In many ways the Borzoi is an introverted athlete. Graceful, thoughtful and slightly reserved, perfectly content to observe the world from a comfortable vantage point, preferably somewhere soft.
