Daily Care at a Glance

Exercise

Moderate exercise needs for the size — daily walks and swimming if available keeps them healthy and content. Avoid over-exercising in heat; the thick coat and size make temperature regulation important.

Grooming

The thick double coat is a significant maintenance commitment — regular brushing prevents matting, and seasonal blowouts require daily attention to manage the volume of loose hair.

Training

Gentle, willing, and intelligent — Newfoundlands respond beautifully to patient positive reinforcement. They're eager to please and take to training readily. Start early -- good leash manners on a 60 kg dog are considerably more important than on a small breed.

The Newfoundland Story

The Newfoundland is a large, sweet-natured working dog from Canada’s Atlantic coast, originally bred to haul nets and pull people from cold, rough water. That history still shows. They can swim like machines, and more importantly, they stay calm when things aren’t.

Temperament is the headline. Patient, steady, and famously good with children, they’ve earned the “nanny dog” reputation the hard way. Not hype, but consistency. They tolerate noise, chaos, and small humans climbing over them with a level of calm that’s rare in any breed.

They’re also enormous. At 45–68 kg, everything is scaled up — the footprint, the food bill, and the impact when they decide to lean on you like a piece of furniture. They shed heavily, especially during coat changes, and the drool is part of daily life. Not occasional. Daily.

Exercise needs are moderate for their size. Walks and the chance to swim keep them happy. They’re not built for apartments — not because they’re wild, but because they simply take up too much physical space to live comfortably in one.

Training is straightforward if you keep it positive. They’re intelligent, willing, and responsive, but sensitive. Harsh handling isn’t needed and doesn’t help.

There’s history behind the reputation. A Newfoundland named Seaman travelled with Lewis and Clark across North America, and another is said to have pulled Napoleon from the water. They’re not just gentle — they’re capable.

They grow fast, often putting on serious weight in their first year, and like most giant breeds, they don’t get as long as you’d like. It’s the trade-off.

For families with space who want a genuinely gentle giant with a natural instinct to look after people, the Newfoundland sits in a class of its own.
