The Portuguese Water Dog is best known to most people as the breed chosen by Barack Obama for the White House, presumably because they’re low-shedding and suit allergy-sensitive households. That’s the polished PWD version. The reality is a hard-working fishing dog that's been hauling nets, retrieving gear, and carrying messages between boats on the Atlantic coast of Portugal since 700BC.
That background still runs the show. These are energetic, capable dogs that expect a job. They’re loyal, affectionate, and very people-focused, but they’re also vocal. Not just alert barking, but commentary. They’ll let you know what’s happening, what might be happening, and what they think about it. It can be managed. It doesn’t disappear.
Physically, they’re proper athletes, 16 to 27 kg with real stamina. They need more than a walk. They need activity, and ideally water. With webbed toes and a natural instinct to swim, they’re outstanding in it. Swimming isn’t just exercise, it’s where they make sense. Without enough physical and mental work, they get bored, and a bored, intelligent dog tends to get destructive and vocal.
They’re also “mouthy” dogs. Carrying things, chewing, interacting with the world through their mouths. If you don’t give them something appropriate to do, they’ll pick something you’d rather they didn’t.
The coat is the trade-off. Thick, wavy or curly, and low-shedding, but it grows continuously and mats if ignored. Regular brushing and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is part of owning one.
Training is a strong point. They’re smart, responsive, and enjoy working with you, especially when it feels purposeful. Give them structure and variety and they’ll thrive.
For active owners who want a capable, engaging dog and don’t mind the noise, the coat, or the effort, the Portuguese Water Dog delivers. If you’re after something low-key, this isn’t it.
