The Chorkie is what happens when a Chihuahua and a Yorkshire Terrier combine forces and decide the world needs a very small dog with a very large opinion of itself. These tiny crossbreeds fit comfortably on a lap but behave as if they’re in charge of the house.
Despite the polished look, the Yorkshire Terrier side of the Chorkie comes from working ratters in 19th-century textile mills. Underneath the silk, there’s a dog bred to hunt.
With bright eyes, upright ears and a silky coat that can range from short to flowing, Chorkies carry a mix of Chihuahua alertness and Yorkshire Terrier polish. What they lack in size they make up for in presence.
They tend to bond closely with one person and can be intensely loyal. That attachment often comes with a protective streak. They’re quick to announce visitors and keep a close watch on anything they consider their territory, which usually includes everything.
Like most small terrier mixes, they’re lively, curious and confident well beyond their physical limits. They don’t always recognise their size, which can lead to bold decisions in situations that don’t necessarily require them.
They do best in homes where they get plenty of attention and structure. Left to their own devices, they can become noisy, demanding and a little too sure of themselves. Early socialisation and clear boundaries make a noticeable difference.
For the right owner, the Chorkie is an engaging and affectionate companion. Loyal, expressive and full of character, they bring plenty of personality in a very small frame. Just don’t expect a quiet or low-key dog.
