Daily Care at a Glance

Exercise

Moderate energy. A good daily walk and a bit of play keeps a Cesky happy, though they’re just as content supervising the backyard.

Grooming

This coat takes commitment. Regular brushing and proper clipping are part of the deal, but the result is one of the most stylish terriers in the park.

Training

Bright, thoughtful learners who usually approach training with a cooperative attitude, especially compared with some of their more argumentative terrier cousins.

The Cesky Terrier Story

The Czech Republic’s gift to the terrier world looks like a Scottish Terrier that went to finishing school and found a very talented groomer. The result is the Cesky Terrier, a rare and elegant little dog with a long, silky coat that falls neatly along the body and gives it a surprisingly refined look.

The breed was developed in the mid-20th century by Czech geneticist František Horák, who set out to create a terrier suited to hunting in the forests of Bohemia. By crossing Scottish Terriers with Sealyham Terriers, he produced a dog that kept the working instincts of a terrier but with a calmer, more manageable temperament.

Interesting fact: the Cesky Terrier is one of the rarest recognised dog breeds in the world, with relatively small breeding populations even today. You’re unlikely to see one at the local dog park.

That slightly softer personality is one of the Cesky’s defining traits. They still have the determination and curiosity typical of terriers, but tend to be less argumentative than many of their cousins. Intelligent and affectionate, they enjoy being part of family life and usually get along well with people and other pets when raised with them.

Their distinctive coat needs regular grooming to maintain the breed’s characteristic clipped style. When kept properly, the Cesky carries itself with a quiet elegance that feels almost aristocratic for a working terrier.

For the right owner, the Cesky Terrier is a genuinely appealing companion. Loyal, affectionate and quietly confident, they offer terrier spirit in a more relaxed package, along with the rare pleasure of owning one of the dog world’s lesser-known breeds.
