The Cavachon is what happens when the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise combine their best qualities to produce a dog built almost entirely for companionship. The result is a small, cheerful fluff-ball with a permanently optimistic outlook and a strong belief that humans exist mainly to provide cuddles.
Usually weighing around 6–9 kg and standing roughly 30–35 cm tall, the Cavachon sits comfortably in the “portable companion” category. They tend to inherit the gentle, affectionate nature of the Cavalier along with the playful bounce and soft coat of the Bichon. The overall effect is a dog that looks like a slightly animated teddy bear and behaves like one too.
Because both parent breeds were developed to live closely with people, Cavachons are highly social little dogs. They enjoy company, follow their owners from room to room, and are happiest when included in daily life rather than left alone for long periods. Their friendly nature usually extends to children, visitors and other pets, which is why they’re often considered one of the easier small dogs to integrate into family life.
Cavachons were first intentionally bred in the United States in the 1990s as part of the designer dog movement. The goal was to combine the Cavalier’s sweet temperament with the Bichon’s soft, often lower-shedding coat. While not guaranteed to be hypoallergenic, many do shed less than traditional small breeds.
For all their fluff and charm, the Cavachon’s real strength is companionship. Affectionate, cheerful and deeply people-focused, they thrive on being part of everyday life. Give them a bit of play, a comfortable spot on the sofa and plenty of company, and you’ll have a loyal little dog that brings a lot of warmth into a home.
